The Friday Night Ride to the Coast (or FNRttC) was started by intrepid cyclists from the Cheam and Morden CTC.
The group cycles around once a month (skipping the coldest dates in winter). The routes always start from Hyde Park Corner at midnight and end in various seaside resorts, including Bognor, Whitstable, Brighton and Southend. At least one a year is a 'genteel ride' that aims for 'conversational' speed.
I'd never done more than 20 miles in one go when I first joined this intrepid band of friendly and experienced people and I've loved every ride I've been on. Even a rain-soaked November ride ended with a huge sense of achievement.
Rolling wayfinders mean it's impossible to get lost and a TEC team at the back can fix practically anything.
It's free to participate there are some ground rules, mainly that you sign up beforehand with fabulous ride leader Simon Legg and that you turn up on a bike in good repair. You are also expected to carry spare inner tubes and repair essentials although the TEC crew are always on hand to help those in trouble.
The lack of traffic and wonderful camaraderie mean I highly recommend this ride to anyone even slightly tempted.
